Playing with light
When I temporarily came back to the Netherlands because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I had a lot of time to get back into drawing.
I was inspired by an artist on Instagram, who took an existing image and traced it over three times, all three just a bit apart from each other. The idea was that one of them was pink, the other one yellow and the third one blue. When pink and yellow overlap, that part becomes red. When yellow and blue overlap, it becomes green and when blue and pink overlap, it becomes dark blue. When all colours overlap, it becomes black. I interpretated it myself as coloured transparent plastic, which is also used in theaters for example, to give colour to the lights on stage. That is why I called this series 'Playing with light'. I like the fact that the paradox is that no actual light is used. It speaks to the imagination :) .
I like how the bright colours contrast with the crisp white paper. Occasionally, the paper gets a little bit stained. Fully unintended of course and I do my best not to stain it, but if it does happen, it's not that bad.
The same goes for little mistakes I make when I'm drawing. My aim is to make it look as sleek as possible, like it hasn't been done by hand. But for me, the little mistakes are making it more human, more artisanal and more original.
